FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
General questions and answers regarding the forum. Technical questions and answer can be found in the server’s FAQ.
What do I need in order to be come a member? - Parent's consent
If you're a minor, make sure your parents know and are okay with you getting involved. - A name
For your safety and the safety of everyone else on the forum, we ask that at least one of the administrators have your name and know who you are. - To be involved with NCFCA
Why else would you bother joining? You do not necessarily need to be affiliated with NCFCA, but we ask that you at least be involved with Reg10n in some way or another. What do moderators do?
Moderators read every single topic and every single post to make sure that nothing offensive or hurtful has been post and that y’all aren’t spamming. As you can imagine, this is a big and tedious job. This is also why we try to impress upon y’all that spamming senselessly helps no one. It gives the moderators more to do. THINK before you post, and respect the moderators’ time and effort. The nuts and bolts of what is a moderator is as follows:
• Strong communication between mods and admins, and no encroaching on a mod's responsibilities without clarification. Admins keep their noses out of the mods' responsibilities and mods defer to admins.
• Mods will do most of the regulating (locking, editing, deleting) unregulated by admins.
• Two mod maximum for each section to make communication easier.
• When the need for more mods arises, the admins will appoint members who they think will make good moderators.
What do administrators do?
I know, it seems like we do nothing except post announcements, but in actuality, it is our job to keep this place running smoothly. We are in charge of correcting problems and overseeing the forum. We have almost-but-not-quite supreme power over the forum. Our role has been established as . . .
• Admins will do the archiving and general forum maintenance (avatars, forum settings, et cetera)
• Admins will share their concerns about locking/editing with the mods, but will only take action when the mod defers to them
Who ARE the administrators and moderators?
We’re a motley crew, and you can read what we have to say about ourselves here: http://ncfca10.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~130.asp But for the most part, if you want to know who we are, you’re going to have to get to know us. ; )
How do I get a title?
The answer here is a simple one – beg an administrator. If you ask nicely perhaps you’ll be surprised. Getting a member title is completely arbitrary.
Can you do anything about those annoying ads?
Unfortunately, no. It’s another fault of the forum server – because this is free, the company has to make money somehow, and this is the reason for the ads. I’m afraid there’s nothing we can do get to get rid of them.
How come, when I’m not logged in, I can’t view certain sections of the forum?
This is a security measure to make sure that extra personal information isn’t being broadcasted all over the internet. The Team Policy section and the Discussion section can only by viewed by members of the forum. The internet is still a dangerous place, and you still need to be careful, but you can set your mind at rest that whatever personal information you share can only be seen by members who are logged in. More information about that here: http://ncfca10.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~234.asp
Why can’t I upload my own avatar?
This is a very primeval forum server and its abilities are limited. Because of this, only administrators can upload avatars. This also helps to weed out any potentially offensive avatars. If you ask nicely, however, they may upload one for you upon your request. And if you ask Ruth nicely (OrigamiKid) she’ll make you an avatar of what you want, or get one of her artsy friends to.
Can I start a poll/game?
Yes and no. If you’re itching to start a poll or game, you certainly have the freedom to do so, but you’ve got to take your topic to a moderator first. In order to cut back on spam, all games and polls must be started by moderators. If any polls or games are started without the approval of a moderator, it will be promptly deleted. For further explanation see: http://ncfca10.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~344.asp
I can put whatever I want in my signature?
Yes . . . to an extent. We ask that if you put pictures in your signature that you limit it size-wise to NO BIGGER than 300 pixels by 600 pixels. And if you have A LOT of text in your signature, we ask that make the text size as small as possible. It’s annoying for people reading threads when they’re seeing more of signatures than of actual posts. As a general rule, your signature should not be bigger than the length of your average post.
Where’d my thread/post go?
Moderators reserve the right to delete any spam without warning. If your thread or post is missing it’s probably because 1) it constituted spam, or 2) it was hurtful or offensive in some way. Also, if you double post or duplicate a thread that is already in existence, that post/thread will get the ax as well.
I had an alter/extra account -- what happened to it?
It was most likely deleted. Alters and extra accounts aren't allowed. If you didn't like your first account, why would a second one be better??
Are out of region members allowed?
Certainly -- especially with debate and speech, it's good to have the perspective of someone from a different region. It makes for better discussion. However, their identities have to be verified before they're allowed into the Team Policy section, because, as you may know, they can get a bit paranoid about leaking evidence and case lists all over the nation.
Speaking of evidence . . . are there any rules regarding that?
I direct you to the following thread: http://ncfca10.forumco.com/topic~TOPIC_ID~220.asp Just remember that in order to be privy any real benefits, you have to give in order to get. You have to work in order to reap.
Where are the parents?
There aren’t any. Well, yes, there are such thing as parents, but they do not run this forum. (I’ll give you a minute to let that sink in.) This forum is run completely by students. Yes, parents read the forum, and yes, our parents hold us accountable for what we say on here, but no, there are no parents in a position of leadership on this forum. Foolish, maybe. Scary, yes. But this board is run for students, by students, and of students. Make sure your parents are aware of that and comfortable with that.
So what is this ‘spam’ you speak of?
Contrary to my mother's generation's presuppositions, spam is not icky canned meat. According to tecrime.com, spam is "to indiscriminately post unsolicited, unwanted, irrelevant, or inappropriate messages, especially commercial advertising in mass quantities." Basically, anything irrelevant, useless, meaningless, derogatory, or not of general interest qualifies as spam. To insure the prevention of spam, we ask that you keep posts more than two lines long, please.
What is the purpose of this forum?
It is imperative to understand that the purpose of this forum is twofold: Primarily this is a place to flex our speech and debate skills and to become better competitors by bouncing arguments and ideas off of each other. Secondarily, this is a place to meet new people and to unify our region in friendship. This is not a place to hang out with the people you already know and this is not a place to steal evidence without working for it. This place exists as a networking facility so we can strengthen our skills and get to know new people. We're striving for better competition and unity as a region.
What's the standard?
John 13:34-35, The Message, "Let me give you a new command: Love one another. In the same way I loved you, you love one another. This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples—when they see the love you have for each other."
Philipians 2:14-15, NIV, "Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe"
We have a standard of behavior -- not just that we are 'good' and don't cause trouble, but something greater than that. We are striving to be people above reproach, people who are kind and loving to everyone, people who reach out to those loners. Try and keep these verses in mind in your dealings around the forum. Especially remember that it's hard to read tones since we only have 22 smileys availible to convey any emotions; don't jump to conclusions and always be gracious.
This is best summed up by Kate's signature:quote: Think before you post --- then edit.
