Like the one we had last competition season, this thread is for you to post about some of the speeches that you enjoyed the most this year.
In addition to posting the speech itself (category, competitor), a sentence about what made it great would be excellent!

Okay, here are some of my favorites (in no order):
1. Luke's OI, "Crime and punishment" His accent is the BEST! 2. The Edelblut's Duo, "Lord of the Flies" I only got to see it at sun, and I heard it got even better! 3. The Cloutier/Latham duo, "the Whipping Boy" Awesome, awesome, awesome! 4. The Au's duo, "The Glass Slipper" (I think that was the title) Excellent choreography! 5. Michael Smith's HI, (I forget what it was called) Very funny accents and characters! 6. Schylers Wolf's HI, "Dave Barry is not Making this up" The mental ladies are the best. 7. Micah's great HI, "William Tell" "ooh" 8. David Frye's OI, "The Zombie Survival Guide" "I'm Tom Brokenjaw" 9. All the speeches I didn't get to see, including: the penson's exposes, the Thornton's duo, and many others.
There are a bunch more that I'll post later. |

My fav. speeches as follows:
Edelbluts' said duo.....It's funny, because I went in to see it expecting to be pretty bored. And yet I wasn't! It was pretty funny to see my friend's, who was timing, expression when he was watching it!!!
Ariel Wolf's OI- THIS WAS THE BEST!!!!!!!! It's funny, because I'm in the same speech club/class as her and usually you get pretty bored watching the same speeches OVER AND OVER but I could watch it a thousand times and not get bored!!!!
The Thortons' duo-AW!!!! I ABSOLUTELY loved it!!! I'd expect two people playing the same character would be confusing, but you just made it so simple and you really owned it! Way to GO!!!!!!!!!
Leah Rachel's DI-IT WON 2ND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-Okay, I saw it like 1 or 2 times before regionals, but then I hadn't seen it with the alternative intro. and when I saw it at Regionals I was shocked! IT WAS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
Micah's HI-AWESOME!!!! Nothing more need be said.
Luke's OI-It's so moving and powerful! I have yet to see the conclusion!!!! (And I'm in the same class.......hm.........)
Meghan Texiera's HI-Great character portrayals!!!! You rock girl!
The Bettis/Wright DUO-AWESOME TOO!!!!!!!-Okay, everybody else in the room seemed to understand all the jokes except me. Anyway, Jon, you were HILARIOUS and I just loved it!!!
Andrew's HI-Who COULDN'T loved it?!?!?!!? I love the voices and characters and especially the Judge.
THE ENTIRE IMPROMPTU FINALS ROUND AT NEST!!! They were all AWESOME! |

I didn't get to watch as many speeches as I would have liked, but here were my favorites from the ones I did watch:
Duo: Wright/Bettis- That was funny! Cass/Johanson's 'A Series of Unfortunate Events'- The acting was really enjoyable! Au/Au's Cinderella... I loved the singing and dancing they included there! Sayre/Sayre's Cinderella... I wasn't expecting this twist on Cinderella, but it was pretty funny! Penson/Penson- Turtles! :)
OI: Lennae Reidsma- She wrote her own, about Hagar, and it was just incredible! Micah Edulblut- It was quite entertaining; I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! Leah Rachel Bode's story about a cattle dog :)
Persuasive: Rachel Sayre- It had such a meaningful, honest, strong message, and even some drama! It was a real inspiration to me.
OO Alejandra Rossi's speech... I used to try crazy things in attempts to fly, too! :) But it also had a really important message about discovering Christ in our lives.
They were all great to watch!

Hehe... I'm glad you liked our DUO. Here's a few of my top speeches (not that I watched very many!):
DUO: Thornton/Thornton - I couldn't stop laughing! It was amazing how both girls played Junie B. Jones with such consistency. I couldn't get over "Mrs." Sayre/Sayre - Such a cool twist and the hole was amazing!! Weekley/Fiore - the dancing was awesome and everything was so coordinated! I loved the "flash backs" to when Anastasia was little.
OI: Linda J's story about the prince who needed to marry an "equal" was so funny! I especially liked the wolf Sarah's story about lollypops and gum and dragons was lovely! I loved the voices.
DI: Chelsea Rankin - what a piece! It was so cool how it wasn't set in the US and that it ended with hope!
OO: Alejandra's "Dreams" is so beautiful! I loved the stories, but what makes me like it most of all is how real she is it in. It's like she's talking to you personally. Just amazing, girl!

Wow...Region 10 had some incredible speeches this year! Here are some of the ones I had the privilege of seeing:
Apologetics Aaron Cooper---This young man is analytical and very sincere. Perfect for this category. I do hope he receives the at-large slot
Dramatic Hannah Weekley---One of the better DI's I've seen in years. She works in humor toward the beginning and leaves the message more towards the end. (plus...no main characters die during the speech! )
Duo Cass/Johanson---I couldn't believe this speech didn't break at Regionals! It is very well acted and terribly funny. The running joke about violin concertos cracked me up! Fiore/Weekley---A powerful, dramatic piece. One of my favorite aspects of it was the slavic accents. And the way these ladies pronounce Anastasia gives me chills. Johanson/Lane---Their talent and hard work on this piece was not recognized by a invitation to regionals this year, unfortunately. I really liked their selection and loved their characters. And the boys coordinated this incredible fight scene...very amusing.
Expository Elliot Penson---He has a humor style all his own and I really like it. His boards for this topic were unusually good (for a Penson!). I don't know if this beats his cardboard speech, but it at least comes close. Dominic Penson---Great topic! Everyone loves hearing about caffeine. He gave a really neat explanation of why coffee keeps us awake. Dominic is just a fun speaker to listen to.
Humorous Linda Johanson---Took me almost the entire speech to realize she was talking about Sleeping Beauty, and not Snow White...but it was still really funny! Her "idiot guy" character is hysterical, especially coming from someone like Linda.
Open Andrew Cass---I loved all the allusions to Get Smart! Aside from that, it was a normal, well-acted, hysterical Andrew speech. Terribly funny. Jonathan Fiore---His Gollum character always makes me smile. The intensity in certain parts of the speech really made me shudder. I look forward to seeing him continue to compete in interps. Ariel Wolf---Her British accents are phenomenal. Characters are distinct and funny...and the story is great and has a great finish to it. James Lane---A hilarious piece! The "remembering the future" concept has so much potential and is perfect humor material. James did a nice job with his different characters. Sir Hetubris was a perfect, arrogant snob! Linda Fiore---This was a 'different' sort of piece. Not dramatic, and not overly funny. It's really just a cute little story. The Bronx accent is very enjoyable to listen to, as is the voice of Frances. David Frye---"I'm Tom Broken-jaw." This speech had me in stitches. I never knew that David was such a great interper! (and I never would have guessed by looking at him) He was throwing himself all over the stage and getting really into it. Hannah Lane---Perhaps the only way to make a Nancy Drew story entertaining is to have Hannah act it out. She did a marvelous job keeping me interested in the story. Wide varietey of characters, good voices. (especially the ditzy Nancy) Sarah Fiore---A perfect fairy tale of sorts. Though the plot is still very confusing to me, the speech was fantastic. Several exclamations have been firmly embedded in my head. (Lollipops!...Bellissimo!) The creativity Sarah employed in representing the different animals was outstanding.
Persuasive Hayley Hutchins---A very moving and persuasive speech. She really made me think about it. When I get my drivers license, I'll probably take her recommended action. |

DUO: Edelblut/Edelblut: Totally impressed Tim. You have theatre deep down inside you! I love how Micah just made you dig it up! It was so intense...and you're voices complement each other perfectly!
Thornton/Thornton: both playing the same character! How fresh! Rejuvenating! Original! Very nice.
Fiore/Weekly: Intense. Clean. Accents. Expressions....choreography...you two have it all!
I was surprised at how well the serious, intense duos did this year. And it makes me very happy. I love to see those do well. It's much easier for a judge to stick with the funny and cute...but to impress above funny cuteness with a strong, intense speech..ahhhh! Talent!
OO: Kara...wwjd...loved it! You have a great voice to listen to...very easy on muh ears..and you passion was catching!
HI: Andrew. I laughed. Loved the alternate ending option....although I'm not entirely sure it's rule savvy (and this is coming from the "rules freak"). I can't say my socks were blown off...I expected to be entertained. You are so clean and polished. NCFCA has totally served it's purpose for you! I will be a fan wherever you go!
Ariel, I am so proud of you. Sweepstakes! And to think you hated speech...now serious little Ariel has gone comedian! She never ceases to amaze me!
EXPOS:
This Penson dynasty thing is killing me! You guys have it all! Organization, props, excitement, accents (not like they're really needed in this category...)poise, and you're just really likable! I am officially grossed out by the amount of caffeine consumed by Americans, also weired out by the insane fads we put ourselves through, and am stuck in my inabiliy to conceptualized the importance and meaning of water. (I must say I liked Madeline's best...simply because my brain is doing loops with the vastness of something as simple as water.
And those are pretty much the only categories I saw....

Okay, here were some of my favorite speeches of the year.
Dramatic: Hannah Weekley: This speech had it all done. Acting, accents, message were all there. Perfect! Eden Estrada: Eden played such a good sickly person! And a belivable death bed scene! Kara Bettis: Wow. Intense. Very well acted the demons were creepy!
Duo: Penson/Penson: ADORABLE! I loved this one! Made me laugh really hard. "I'll be your slave for life!" Fiore/Weekely: Made me cry real tears both times I watched it. The dancing was impressive and the acting was even better! Thornton/Thornton: Cracked me up. Junie B. is my hero.
HI: Eden Estrada: I love Amelia! The piece was superb and the acting and blocking were very funny!
Open: Hannah Lane: Such a great Nancy Drew with hilariouse twists! (some inspired by me... ) Hannah played the perfect Nancy and the accents and acting were amazing. Andrew Cass: This would have to be the funniest speech of the year! It was very clever, well done and the blocking was amazing! Lennae Reidsma: Made me cry! Such a powerful piece and she wrote it herself! Luke Rock: I think Luke dispelled the myth of guys not being able to portray girls in a dramatic piece. Very powerful and the acting was awesome!
OO: Nicole Bianchi: Patriotic and personal. Held my attention. Go Nicole! Andrew Cass: Very funny (as usual).
Expos: Madeline Penson: Adorable! I love water! Very crisp and sweet. Dominic Penson: Very awesome and entertaining! Andrew Cass: Was hilariouse! I laughed so hard! (I didn't see Elliot's ) |

Alright, I'll start with those from my club:
Duo: Karla Nave/Lilly Redan-I loved you guys duo. You probably knew that, but I'll say it again. It had an amazing message, your choreography was amazing and I loved seeing the judges faces at the end. When Karla would say "There were wounds on the little child's hands, and wounds on his feet," such a look of realization would come over the judges faces. It was really cool to watch.
Sayre/Sayre-The voices were awesome! I laughed so hard.
Persuasive: Rachel S: She put a lot of herself into this speech. I could really connect.
Luke S: Loved the driving analogy.
Open: Lennae: Amazing! I can't believe you wrote that. I was in tears.
DI: Karla-Your piece was amazing. When I read the book, I could just see you acting out every part. Loved the message;it really made me think about how much I stand up for my faith.
Hannah S-didn't see it, but my mom did. It must have been good to win Regionals!
OK, now for non-Apollos people:
Duo: Hopkins/Weekly-the English accents were perfect! Choreography was amazing.
Au/Au-the song you guys sang sent shivers down my spine. I loved the clock "donging."
Penson/Penson- Turtles! What more can I say?
Estrada/Estrada-saw it through the window. "Last Sin Eater," love that book, well done.
Cooper/Cooper- I had "The Frill" in my literature this year, and you guys acted it out the very same way I imagined it in my head. Awesome!
Fiore/Weekly-I've always loved the story of Anastasia. This duo sent shivers down my spine. Amazing choreography, and I loved the accents.
OO: Although I never saw Alejandra's speech, I have to say that my mom did, and loved it(which doesn't normally happen.)
Expos: Madeline P-who knew that water was so interesting?
Tessa Lewis-liked the hats
Michael Smith-It was really interesting, and funny. I had never heard about the "dark tide" before. When you had the thing of molasses though, I was scared that you were going to spill some on me. |

So many great speeches! I didn't see one speech that I really disliked. I did like some more than others, and here are some of my favorites, in no particular order:
DRAMATIC: (I only saw one this year) Linda Johanson First of all, it was so sad! Very moving. I loved your Chinese accent. The characters were all portrayed well, and the guy characters were low-key and weren't awkward at all. Very good job with a difficult piece... that ending was a killer.
DUO: Thornton/Thornton I loved the duality of Junie’s personality. When a piece is this silly, it had better be done well. Fortunately, it was done masterfully! Bettis/Wright Hilarious. You took a piece that could alienate some of your audience, especially in NCFCA, and make it so likeable that even the stiffest judges couldn’t help but laugh. You two work well together. Keep it up, guys! Penson/Penson I never thought I’d use this word when referencing one of my favorite speeches, but… adorable! Absolutely adorable! Penson/Penson duos have a habit of being like that, I’ve found. Your blocking is very creative and your characters are, quite honestly, really, really cute! Edelblut/Edelblut Creepy. In a good way, though. Tim, I am so happy for you! It looks like you’ve found your niche in IE’s! Dramatic speeches seem to be working really well for you. Micah, as usual, your acting is very good, and I enjoyed seeing the darker side of your acting range for a change. I saw a little of it in your “hell” DI, but the two of you are positively chilling in this duo. A very good job. Sayre/Sayre Hilarious! I almost always enjoy fractured fairy tales (as is evidenced by my choice of HI this year), but this is one of my favorites. Some of the jokes you added in through blocking and timing were particularly creative. Good job! Cloutier/Latham Whoa, where’d you guys come from? Congrats on making it to Regionals, and I look forward to seeing you both at Nats next year! I don’t know, maybe you’ve both always been stellar IE-ers before now and I just never notices, but your acting abilities really caught me by surprise. I’ve always enjoyed this piece, and you two did a good job with it.
HUMOROUS: Micah Edelblut As usual, your HI rocks. I think this one has a better shot at placing at Nats than your previous HI’s, though. Your sense of humor has matured, but you still know how to be ridiculous. You command the room more now than you did a few years ago. I look forward to competing against you come June! Schuyler Wolf Dave Barry has been done so many times that the first time I sat in on your speech, I expected to be bored out of my mind. I figured that the lines would be funny, but the speech itself would be mediocre. This, of course, is because I had never seen you do an HI before. I especially like your portrayal of those two wonderfully annoying ladies and the emotion you put into your lines. You’ve managed not to fall into the trap of letting Dave Barry’s humor own your speech. Instead, you own it with your delivery! Keep it up, man. Ariel Wolf Pretty much all of what I said about Schuyler’s speech is true for yours. You’ve taken Bill Bryson’s comedy to new heights by really getting into character and making the narration come to life. In my mind, you have the greatest facial expressions of any girl I’ve seen, even beating Michelle Carrillo at Nats last year. And believe me, that’s saying something! Linda Johanson Napoleon Dynamite has nothing on your guy character! I had the pleasure of coaching this speech a little bit, and I hope I was able to help it a little bit. Congrats on qualifying to Regionals! A very funny speech.
OPEN: Sarah Fiore Hannah Lane Lennae Reidsema Aaron Reale Luke Rock Ariel Wolf Micah Edelblut Elizabeth Sanders
ORIGINAL ORATORY: Michael Mullany Micah Edelblut Kara Bettis
EXPOS: Jeremy Edelblut Elliot Penson Micah Edelblut
(I still have to see Dominic's and Madeline's at Nats!)
So many awesome speeches! You guys continue to amaze me. I expect to hear you spoken of favorably someday; if not on earth, then in heaven. I still want to write about Open, OO, and Expos, but this has been sitting on my computer in a Word document, and I knew that if I didn’t post it now I’d never post it, and the thread would be archived.
